    Writers Overcoming Obstacles

WRITERS: IN HONOR OF WOMEN’S HISTORY:     “WHY WE WRITE:    OVERCOMING OBSTACLES  TO FULFILL OUR MISSION”
    • Jane La Tour
    • Jo Anne Meekins
    • Susan E. Davis
Jane LaTour, Jo Anne Meekins, and Susan Elizabeth Davis write about very different topics – labor, spirituality, choice – but what connects them is their focus on women and on their mission. All three have faced many obstacles along the way to publication and to having their voices heard, but they have persisted and are succeeding with their writing. Find out how they’ve done it and how you can do it too.

    SPEAKERS for the DEAD

    Picture
On Sunday, May 9, 2010 from 2 pm to 4 pm, New York poets gathered at the historic Flushing Meeting House (137-16 Northern Blvd. Flushing, New York 11354) to read the names of people who died in our City between 1980 - 2008 and were located through the Hart Island Project digital database. Each poet will read a page of names from a ledger book followed by a poem of their choice.

The list of poets who read included: Grace Beniquez, Ira Cohen, Louise Landes-Levi, Jo Anne Meekins, Louis Reyes Rivera, Ilka Scobie, Jackie Sheeler, Abraham Stubenhaus, Stacy Szymaszek, and Steve Turtell.

The event was jointly hosted by Flushing Monthly Meeting and Bowne House Historical Society who share a long history of supporting freedom of conscience dating back to 1657. This event represents the first time the names of the dead have been publicly read aloud since graveside religious services on Hart Island ended in 1958. The public is no longer permitted to visit actual gravesites on Hart Island.

The event was free and open to the public; donations welcome. More events will be planned in the future.  Interested artists should contact Rosalind Maya Lama at mayalama@hotmail.com and or Melinda Hunt at hartisland@aol.com.

For more information about Hart Island, please view the videos below of my poetry reading and Melinda Hunt's interview; & visit http://hartisland.net  ttp://hartisland.net/wwwebs

"How the other half dies is indicative of how the other half lives.
The inequalities of life extend into how we handle our dead.
Through the powerful voices of prominent poets, we hope to make
an invisible 101 acres and one-tenth of the population visible."
    – Melinda Hunt, founder of The Hart Island Project
